Hazardous Cleaning Products to Avoid Using Around Birds
Some household products are definite no-nos to use around birds as they can harm your bird's respiratory system. Stay away from the following products when cleaning cages and surrounding areas in your home:
- Ozone generators (some air purifiers create Ozone)
- Ionizers
- Aerosols
- Products that emit strong fumes
- Scented candles
- Deodorizers (carpet, fabric and plug-ins)
- Pine oil
- Dry-Cleaning chemicals
- Window cleaners containing ammonia
- Bleach
- Boric acid
- Detergents (have caustic, acidic or alkaline properties)
- Solvents and spot removers
- Acetone
- Spray starch
- Chlorine and bromine
- Furniture polish
- Petroleum distillates
- Quaternary ammoniums
If you must use any of these products, remove your bird from the environment and don't return the bird until all residue and fumes are gone.
