Bird Cage Cleaning Tips
We love our birds but, oh my, they can create a mess! Granted, the last thing we want to do when we come home from work is clean the nasty cage, but we all know if we wait too long, our homes start smelling like a zoo! Preserve your sanity and keep bird messes under control with these time-saving cage cleaning tips.
Speed Clean Daily
Use no-rinse, bird-safe products like Poop-Off to wipe down cages, perches and toys daily. Wash food and water bowls when supplying fresh food and water. Keep a clean supply of water bottles and food bowls on hand.
Sweep up seeds, feathers, dust and dander around the cage area or use a hand-held vacuum.
Deep Clean Weekly
Using a bird-safe cleaner or disinfectant, spray, soak, and scrub the cage top to bottom. Use a toothbrush to get into nooks and crannies and other hard to reach areas. Move the cage to the outdoors and rinse thoroughly using a garden hose or power washer. Air-dry.
Keep it Clean
Instead of using newspaper to line cages, use an antimicrobial cage liner. Place a full week's supply of liners in each cage bottom and pull the top layer off daily. Remember to check your bird's droppings for signs of illness before disposing.
Contain food, foraging and feather messes around the cage by placing a seed catcher around your cage. Most cages come with built-in or removable seed catchers.
If your cage sets on a carpeted or wood floor, place a plastic mat under the cage to protect floors.
Use covered feeders and spill-proof coop cups to prevent food messes.
The Good Life
Follow these quick steps and you will spend less time cleaning and more time enjoying life with your bird.
